5B Rovan Buggy 1/5 Scale Overview
The 5B Rovan Buggy is a genuine 1/5 scale gasoline Baja platform engineered for durability, power, and consistent off-road performance. This Hellfire Orange AG edition uses current-generation High Strength Grade A Rovan components and is not a factory second, Grade B unit, or older stock. Rovan builds this buggy for aggressive bashing, extended run sessions, and real-world large-scale RC driving.
A proven 29cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-stroke gasoline engine powers the 5B Rovan Buggy and delivers stock speeds exceeding 40 MPH. As a result, throttle response remains strong while torque delivery stays smooth across dirt, grass, and wide-open terrain.
Chassis, Drivetrain, and Suspension
The 5B Rovan Buggy uses a rear-wheel-drive layout with a rear axle brake to reduce complexity and improve long-term reliability. An 8000 RPM high-performance clutch manages power delivery under load. Second-generation reinforced front and rear suspension components increase durability during high-speed driving and hard landings.
Six-millimeter shocks control suspension movement, while second-generation wasteland tires mounted on reinforced wheel hubs provide consistent traction across mixed off-road surfaces. High-strength ABS plastic components flex under impact and recover quickly, helping prevent damage during crashes.
Engine and Exhaust Performance
At the core of the 5B Rovan Buggy sits a genuine 29cc two-stroke gasoline engine equipped with a 997 carburetor. This carburetor replaces the Walbro unit and remains compatible with 23cc to 32cc Zenoah, CY, HPI Baja, RV, and KM 5B, 5T, and 5SC platforms. A high-quality tuned pipe exhaust improves throttle response and produces an aggressive performance sound. Optional mufflers are available for quieter operation.
Electronics and Radio System
Electronics include a 2.4GHz six-channel radio system tested beyond 600 feet with stable signal performance. Although operation requires only two channels, trim adjustments remain easily accessible under the rear transmitter cover. Metal gear steering and throttle components provide precise control and reliable braking. A built-in SC6V 2000mAh battery supplies consistent power during extended runs.
Assembly and Operation – 5B Rovan Buggy
Out of the Box: Ready to race once the wheels are installed and the car battery has been charged. A minimum two-hour charge is recommended.
Battery Charging:
The buggy includes an external charging port and USB charger, allowing charging without disassembly. Allow the battery to cool for 30 minutes after a full charge before operation. Remove the charger within 30 minutes of reaching full charge to extend battery life. Store the battery fully charged when not in use.Crash Durability:
Minor crashes rarely cause significant damage. Reinforced suspension components and flexible ABS materials absorb impacts effectively during normal off-road driving.Fuel Mixing – 5B Rovan Buggy
Use a 25:1 gasoline-to-oil ratio, equal to 151.4 ml of oil per gallon of gasoline. First, fill the oil compartment of the mixing jug to the 25:1 mark. Then, fill the gasoline compartment to the same level. Use non-synthetic, mineral-based two-cycle oil. Other compatible mineral oils may also be used.
Radio Setup and Operation
This six-channel radio primarily uses two channels. Trim adjustments control steering trim, throttle and brake trim, and control extents, allowing fine tuning of handling and braking response.
Starting Instructions
Ensure the car and radio power on and respond correctly.
Set the choke to the vertical closed position.
Prime the carburetor three to four times, or until fuel becomes visible.
Pull the starter gently until engagement, then use short, quick pulls.
Once the engine fires, turn off the choke and pull again to start.
Never crank more than three times with the choke engaged.Break-In Process – 5B Rovan Buggy
Initial Run: Run the buggy at idle to one-quarter throttle for approximately five minutes, then allow the engine to cool completely.
Second Run: Repeat the process for ten minutes, then cool down.
Third Run: Increase throttle slightly and run for eight to ten minutes, then cool.
Subsequent Runs: Continue for about five cycles while monitoring airflow and debris. A clean engine runs cooler.
Final Break-In: Run at full throttle and burn through one full tank of fuel.
Post-Break-In: Check and snug the exhaust pipe.
Before each run, inspect all bolts and fasteners. Apply thread locker to clutch and brake assembly bolts after cleaning threads with alcohol.
Rigid aluminum upgrades may appear attractive, but high-strength ABS plastic flexes and recovers, which helps prevent secondary damage during off-road use.
