5B Rovan RC 1/5 Scale Baja Buggy Overview
The 5B Rovan RC 1/5 Scale Baja Buggy is a large-scale gasoline off-road platform built for durability, realism, and aggressive desert-style driving. This is a genuine, high-strength Grade A model, not a factory second, grade B, or older unit. Rovan designs this buggy around proven Baja architecture to deliver dependable power, stable handling, and long service life for both new and experienced drivers. The yellow and orange Sunrise body improves visibility while preserving classic Baja styling.
A 29cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-stroke gasoline engine powers the buggy and produces speeds exceeding 40 MPH in stock configuration. As a result, the 5B Rovan RC delivers strong acceleration, crisp throttle response, and authentic engine sound during extended run sessions.
Chassis, Drivetrain, and Suspension
This 1/5 scale 5B Rovan RC buggy uses a reinforced chassis paired with second-generation front and rear suspension components. Six-millimeter shocks control suspension travel and absorb impacts during off-road operation. Second-generation wasteland tires mounted on updated wheel hubs provide reliable traction across dirt, sand, and loose terrain.
An 8,000 RPM clutch transfers power efficiently, while reinforced drivetrain components support sustained high-RPM operation. The platform maintains stable geometry under load, allowing the buggy to track straight and remain predictable at speed.
Engine and Exhaust Performance
At the core of the 5B Rovan RC sits a 29cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-stroke gasoline engine. A high-quality tuned exhaust pipe improves throttle response and overall performance. The exhaust runs loud in stock form, which many drivers prefer for realism, although optional mufflers reduce sound output when needed.
The buggy includes a 997 carburetor that replaces Walbro units and fits 23cc to 32cc engines, including Zenoah, CY, HPI Baja, RV KM 5B, 5T, and 5SC platforms. This carburetor delivers consistent fueling and reliable operation.
Electronics and Radio System
The 5B Rovan RC includes a 2.4GHz six-channel radio system tested at distances exceeding 600 feet. Although the radio offers six channels, normal driving primarily uses two. Trim adjustments under the rear transmitter cover allow precise steering, throttle, and brake tuning.
Electronics draw power from a built-in 6V 2000mAh battery designed for extended run time. All-metal gear servos control steering and throttle functions, providing durability and responsive control during aggressive driving.
Assembly and Operation – 5B Rovan RC
Out of the Box
The buggy is ready to race once you install the wheels and fully charge the onboard battery. A minimum two-hour charge is recommended before initial operation.Battery Charging
The vehicle includes a charging plug and USB charger, allowing charging without disassembly. After a full charge, allow the battery to cool for approximately 30 minutes before operation. Remove the charger within 30 minutes of reaching full charge to extend battery life. Store the battery fully charged when not in use.Crash Durability
Minor crashes rarely cause significant damage. The chassis and suspension withstand typical off-road impacts without compromising alignment.Fuel Mixing – 5B Rovan RC
Use a 25:1 gasoline-to-oil ratio, equal to 151.4 ml of oil per gallon of gasoline. Fill the oil compartment of the mixing jug to the 25:1 mark, then fill the gasoline compartment to the same level. Use non-synthetic, mineral-based two-cycle oil. Many drivers prefer premium TC-W3 mineral oils for reduced carbon buildup, although other compatible mineral oils also work well.
Radio Setup and Operation
The included six-channel radio primarily operates on two channels for this buggy. Steering trim, throttle and brake trim, and control limits adjust through the four trim controls located under the rear transmitter cover. Install four AA batteries in the transmitter before use.
Starting Instructions
Ensure the buggy and radio system are powered on and responding correctly.
Set the choke lever on the carburetor to the vertical closed position.
Press the primer bulb three to four times, or until fuel becomes visible.
Gently pull the starter rope until it engages, then use short, quick pulls.
Crank until the engine fires, typically within one to three pulls.
Turn off the choke and pull the starter one to two times to start the engine.
Never crank more than three times with the choke engaged.Break-In Process – 5B Rovan RC
Initial Run
Run the buggy at idle to one-quarter throttle for approximately five minutes, then allow the engine to cool completely.Second Run
Repeat the process for ten minutes, then allow the engine to cool.Third Run
Increase throttle slightly and run for eight to ten minutes, then cool down.Subsequent Runs
Continue for approximately five cycles while monitoring airflow and debris. A clean engine runs cooler.Final Break-In
Run at full throttle and burn through one full tank of fuel.Post-Break-In
Check and snug the exhaust fasteners after the initial break-in process. Before each run, inspect all bolts and fasteners. Apply thread locker to clutch and brake hardware after cleaning threads with alcohol.
Material Guidance
Although aluminum upgrades may seem appealing, aluminum transfers impact energy and can cause secondary damage. High-strength ABS plastic components flex and recover, making them better suited for high-speed RC use.
