Description
Gas Powered RC Buggy Rovan 5S 1/5 Scale Overview
The Gas Powered RC Buggy Rovan 5S is a true 1/5 scale 4WD off-road platform engineered for power, control, and durability. Powered by a robust 36cc air-cooled two-stroke gasoline engine, this gas powered RC buggy delivers strong torque, stable acceleration, and consistent performance across dirt, grass, and rough terrain.
Rovan builds the 5S with a rigid CNC aluminum chassis and a shaft-driven four-wheel-drive system. As a result, the buggy maintains traction and balance under aggressive throttle input while remaining predictable at speed.
Chassis, Drivetrain, and Suspension
This 1/5 scale gas powered RC buggy uses a full 4WD shaft-drive transmission with front and rear differentials housed in CNC casings. In addition, an 8000 RPM clutch manages power delivery smoothly under load. A central disc brake provides reliable stopping power during high-speed off-road driving.
Eight-millimeter metal shock absorbers control suspension movement and improve stability over uneven terrain. Moreover, CNC shock support plates, a reinforced clutch bracket kit, and metal steering components increase durability during hard landings and repeated off-road use. Small-nail off-road tires mounted on high-strength nylon wheels improve traction on loose surfaces.
Engine and Exhaust Performance
At the core of the Rovan 5S sits a 36cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-stroke gasoline engine featuring a four-point fixed mount. The second-generation Dominator exhaust supports efficient airflow and consistent throttle response. Therefore, acceleration remains smooth and controlled even during extended runs.
Electronics and Radio System
A six-channel BER-TRC4 LCD radio system provides stable signal performance and precise control. Electronics draw power from a 6V 4500mAh NiMH battery. Steering is handled by dual high-torque metal gear servos, while a dedicated digital metal gear servo controls throttle and braking. As a result, steering response stays precise and predictable during aggressive off-road driving.
Assembly and Operation – Gas Powered RC Buggy
Out of the Box: Ready to race once the wheels are installed and the car battery has been charged. A minimum two-hour charge is recommended.
Battery Charging:
The buggy includes a charging plug and USB charger, so charging requires no disassembly. Allow the battery to cool for 30 minutes after a full charge before operation. Remove the charger within 30 minutes of reaching full charge to extend battery life. Store the battery fully charged when not in use.
Crash Durability:
Minor crashes rarely cause significant damage. The chassis and suspension absorb impacts effectively during normal off-road driving.
Fuel Mixing – Gas Powered RC Buggy
Use a 25:1 gasoline-to-oil ratio, equal to 151.4 ml of oil per gallon of gasoline. First, fill the oil compartment of the mixing jug to the 25:1 mark. Then, fill the gasoline compartment to the same level. Use non-synthetic, mineral-based two-cycle oil. Other compatible mineral oils may also be used.
Radio Setup and Operation
This six-channel radio primarily uses two channels. Trim adjustments are located under the rear transmitter cover and control steering trim, throttle and brake trim, steering travel, and throttle travel.
Starting Instructions
Ensure the car and radio power on and respond correctly.
Set the choke to the vertical closed position.
Prime the carburetor three to four times, or until fuel becomes visible.
Pull the starter gently until engagement, then use short, quick pulls.
Once the engine fires, turn off the choke and pull again to start.
Never crank more than three times with the choke engaged.
Break-In Process – Gas Powered RC Buggy
Initial Run: Idle to one-quarter throttle for approximately five minutes, then allow the engine to cool completely.
Second Run: Repeat the process for ten minutes, then cool down.
Third Run: Increase throttle slightly and run for eight to ten minutes, then cool.
Subsequent Runs: Continue for about five cycles while monitoring airflow and debris.
Final Break-In: Run at full throttle and burn through one full tank of fuel.
Post-Break-In: Check and snug the exhaust pipe.
Before each run, inspect all bolts and fasteners. Apply thread locker to clutch and brake assembly bolts after cleaning threads with alcohol.
Although aluminum upgrades may appear appealing, aluminum transfers impact energy and can cause secondary damage. High-strength ABS plastic flexes and recovers, making it better suited for off-road RC use.
