Description

  • These are the NEW High Strength Grade A Rovan 5B models. They are not factory seconds, not Grade B, and not older production. This is the current, high-strength revision built for durability and real-world bashing.

The Rovan 1/5 Scale 5B Baja Buggy is powered by a 29cc single-cylinder, air-cooled two-stroke gasoline engine, capable of 40+ MPH in stock form. It comes factory-equipped with a 997 carburetor, replacing the Walbro, and is compatible with 23–32cc Zenoah, CY, HPI Baja, RV KM 5B/5T/5SC platforms.

Control is handled by a 2.4GHz 6-channel radio system, tested at distances exceeding 600 feet with no signal issues. While only two channels are used for operation, trim adjustments are easily accessed under the rear cover:

    • Top Left: Steering trim

    • Top Right: Throttle and brake trim

    • Bottom Left: Control extents

The vehicle uses a built-in SC 6V 2000mAh battery, providing extended runtime. Charging is done via the included USB charger, through an external charging port with no disassembly required.

    Assembly & Operation:

Out of the box, the vehicle is ready to run once the wheels are installed and the battery is charged. A minimum 2-hour initial charge is recommended. Allow the battery to cool for 30 minutes after charging, remove the charger within 30 minutes of full charge, and store the battery fully charged to maximize lifespan. We personally use a countdown timer (example item 386419780550).

    Crash Durability:

Minor crashes rarely cause damage. A real-world 20 MPH impact into a tree resulted in under $20 in repairs.

    Fuel Mixing:

Runs on a 25:1 gasoline-to-oil ratio. Fill the oil side of the mixing jug to the 25:1 mark, then fill gasoline to the matching level. Excellent results have been achieved using Evinrude Johnson Outboard Premium 2-Stroke Oil, which minimizes carbon buildup and prevents plug fouling. Other quality oils may also be used.

    Starting Instructions:

    1. Power on the radio and vehicle

    2. Set the choke (red lever) to vertical closed

    3. Prime carburetor 3–4 times until fuel is visible

    4. Pull starter gently until engaged, then short, fast pulls

    5. Once engine fires, turn off choke

    6. Pull 1–2 more times to start

    Break-In Procedure:

    • Run 1: Idle to 1/4 throttle for 5 minutes, then full cool down

    • Run 2: Same process for 10 minutes, then cool

    • Run 3: Moderate throttle for 8–10 minutes, then cool

    • Runs 4–5: Continue gradual use, monitor cooling

    • Final: Full throttle allowed, run through a full tank

After break-in, check and snug exhaust bolts. Before each run, inspect all fasteners. Thread locker is recommended on clutch and brake hardware. Clean bolts and holes with alcohol for proper adhesion.

    Upgrade Note:

Many users are tempted to replace plastic components with aluminum. In practice, aluminum is unforgiving and often transfers impact damage deeper into the chassis. The high-strength ABS plastic used on these models flexes and rebounds, preventing cascading failures. In many areas, plastic is the better material.
